Visa, the global payments technology company, announced on Saturday its credit and debit cards will now be accepted at Angkor Wat, one of world’s most popular tourist destinations, to drive tourism and increase the shift from cash to electronic payments in Cambodia.
Angkor Wat is one of the largest religious monuments ever constructed and receives more than two million international visitors each year, according to the Ministry of Tourism Cambodia.
“To further demonstrate its commitment to expanding electronic payments across the country, Visa signed a memorandum of understanding with Angkor Enterprise to promote tourism to Angkor Wat and Cambodia, and Optistech Co. Ltd. as the IT solution vendor,” stated a Visa press release.
“As part of the agreement, Visa will be offering a 3 percent discount on admission tickets to Angkor Wat purchased using Visa cards from October until the end of November 2017,” the press release added.
Visa stated that its cardholders would also be able to enjoy discounts at 50 selected merchants in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap covering dining, shopping, spa and wellness, and lodging.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Angkor Enterprise and its acquiring bank Acleda to launch Visa card acceptance at Angkor Wat ticket booths providing visitors with a faster, secure and more convenient payment experience,” said Sean Preston, Visa’s country manager for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
“Angkor Wat is truly one of the wonders of the world and a must see destination for visitors to Cambodia. We look forward to working with the Cambodian government and Angkor Enterprise to encourage more visitors to Cambodia, drive economic growth, and improve payments for locals and tourists alike,” added Mr Preston.
“As part of our brand promise we want consumers to be able to use their Visa cards to take them everywhere they want to be. With today’s announcement, we are one step closer to fulfilling this vision for travellers to Cambodia.”
At present, visitors to Cambodia can use their Visa cards at more than 7,000 merchant locations and more than 1,000 ATMs across the country.
Chhorn Sopheap, undersecretary of state of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and a director of Angkor Enterprise, said the MOU with Visa was in line with the Finance and Tourism Ministries’ efforts to automate the payment of tickets to Angkor Wat.
“It also makes the ticketing system more transparent, with better accountability,” said Mr Sopheap.
“Within the framework of this modernisation project, I am pleased to be working with various partners, especially Visa, to provide electronic payment acceptance at Angkor Wat ticket booths,” he added.
“This partnership will help to drive tourism and provide an enhanced ticketing experience, increasing convenience and reducing waiting times, for the millions of tourists to the kingdom each year.”
